John Mockett Cramp was born in England, July 25, 1796. He served as pastor in London, the Isle of Thanet and hastings, Sussex. He “took charge in 1844 of the Baptist college in Montreal, Canada. Later he became president of Acadia College, Nova Scotia, in 1851, and retired in 1869 from that position”.
Charles Haddon Spurgeon had this to say about Cramp’s Baptist History:
• “Dr. Cramp has long been a laborious, painstaking student of ecclesiastical history, and his works have been distinguished by some of the higher qualities of a historian. His book on Baptist History is not intended for students; at least, it is thrown into a popular mould, and will be more acceptable to general readers, to whom we most heartily recommend it. All Baptists should possess a copy, and even those of our readers who do not sympathise with our view of the ordinance of baptism, will probably be glad to know what the immersionists have to say about themselves. Secret Power or The Secret of Success in Christian Life and Work by D. L. Moody In Moody’s own words “the object of this book is to help others to know the source of true power, that both their zeal and their knowledge may be of increased service in the Master’s work.” The author saw a lack of power in both testimony and work of Christians in his day—how much more are we in need of the Holy Spirit’s power upon our labours today?

Prayer in accordance to the Word of God? The author's own words describe this book best: "The following chapters relate especially to Prayer; but in order that our prayers may be for such things as are according to the will of God, they must be based upon the revelation of His own will to us; for of Him, and through Him, and to him are all things; and it is only by hearing His Word, in which we learn His purposes toward us and towards the world, that we can pray acceptably, praying in the Holy Ghost, asking those things which are pleasing in His sight."

What is the Christian best noted for? Could it be going to church, reading their Bibles or giving? These and other things are good, but if we are not a praying people, we cannot access God's Power to carry out His great commission and our service for Him. All that we do must be empowered by God and this must be pleaded for in prayer. In the author's words, "All things and everything are dependent on the measure of men's praying. Prayer is the genius and mainspring of life. We pray as we live; we live as we pray." Prayer should be as much a part of our life as each breath we take.

C. H. SPURGEON was the most well known and heard preacher in London by the time he was twenty-one. Although he had no formal theological training, he still arose to great heights of success in the service of his LORD. Spurgeon spoke to thousands each Sunday in the Metropolitan Tabernacle, in his own brand and style of preaching, as well as founding churches, Sunday schools, orphanages and a Pastor's College. In his literary accomplishments he edited a monthly church magazine and was a great supporter and promoter of literature distribution. This volume has endeavoured to portray the life and works of C.H. Spurgeon, beginning with an interesting narrative of his life, choice selections from his sermons and lectures and a large collection of extracts from his most famous writings.

As the author of many commentaries in both the Old and New Testament, Ironside had this to say of his purpose for writing this book: "Fully convinced in my own mind that the doctrine of repentance is the missing note in many otherwise orthodox and fundamentally sound circles today, I have penned this volume out of a full heart. I hope and pray that God will be pleased to use it to awaken many of His servants to the importance of seeking so to present His truth as to bring men to the only place where He can meet them in blessing. He worked his way through school at Princeton, met his wife Susan, and went off to his first pastorate in Dayton, Ohio. James Brookes pastored for 39 years in the same city of St. Louis, built a strong church and stood for the truth. He preached around the country, and for years headed up the fabled Niagara Conferences that historians recognize as being the forerunner of the Fundamentalist movement in America. He was also convinced of the Pre-millennial coming of Christ, during a time when very few people held to such a view. Dr. Brookes considered himself a Bible-believer and spent considerable time and money defending the Authorized Version. He resisted the English revision committee and proved himself ahead of his time in venerating the King James and warning about the coming confusion concerning translations. In his magazine, The Truth and Testimony of Jesus Christ, Dr. Brookes freely exposed the errors of modernism, compromise and clergy unbelief.

The Bible says in James 1:27: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction..." This book will especially help pastors and the church family understand how to minister comfort and support to the widow. May the Lord use what you find in these pages to encourage you to enter into this area of service-which in general has been sadly neglected by the church. This book will also help the widow through her journey of grief and enable her to find acceptance and peace. I trust as I recount how the Lord has enabled me through my own journey of grief, it will bolster your faith, and that the "Suggestions for the Widow" section will give you new hope for the difficult days ahead. Together may we especially draw comfort from what the Bible says in Matthew 5:4: "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted."

HOW “LITTLE PILLOWS” CAME TO BE WRITTEN


A LITTLE girl was away from home on a week’s visit. We will suppose her name was Ethel. The first night, when she was tucked up in bed, and just ready for a good-night kiss, I said, “Now, shall I give you a little pillow?”
Ethel lifted her head to see what was under it, and said, “I have got one, Auntie!”
“It was another sort of pillow that I meant to give you; I wonder if you will like it?”
So then Ethel saw it was not a question of feathers and pillow case; still she did not understand, and so she laughed and said, “Do tell me at once, Auntie, what you mean; don’t keep me waiting to guess!”
Then I told her that, just as we wanted a nice soft pillow to lay our heads down upon at night, our hearts wanted a pillow, too, something to rest upon, some true, sweet word that we might go to sleep upon happily and peacefully. And that it was a good plan always to take a little text for our pillow every night. So she had one that night, and the next night.
The third night I was prevented from com ing up till long after Ethel ought to have been asleep. But there were the bright eyes peeping out robin-redbreast fashion, and a reproachful little voice said, “Auntie, you have not given me any little pillow to night!”
“Then, do you really care about having the little pillows given you, Ethel?”
“Oh, of course I do!” was the answer. She did not seem to think there could possibly be any doubt about it. Certainly the way in which she said that “of course!” showed, that she had no doubt about it!
So it seemed that perhaps other little ones would like to have “little pillows” put ready for every night. For even little hearts are sometimes very weary, and want something to rest upon; and a happy little heart, happy in the love of Jesus, will always be glad to have one of His own sweet words to go to sleep upon.
So here are thirty-one “little pillows,” not to be used all at once, nor even two at a time, but one for every night in the month. The little texts are so short, that they will need no learning; but when you have read the explanation, you will be able to keep the text quite safely and quite easily in your mind.
Read the little book before you kneel down to say your evening prayers, because I hope what you read will always remind you of something to pray about. And then, when you lie down and shut your eyes, let your heart rest on the “little pillow” till “He giveth His beloved sleep.”
When you have read this little book, another will be ready for you, Morning Bells,—little chimes of Bible music to wake you up! Some of them will, I hope, ring in your ears all the day, and help you to go happily and brightly through it, following Jesus at every step.

He travelled extensively, holding missions and conventions all over the States. He was an avid supporter of foreign missions throughout his entire career. He also edited missionary paper, and wrote several books.
